Welcome to my website about old roses. My name is Monique Nuijten, I live in the south part of the Netherlands and ever since I was young I love roses, but never could I find a true rose that would really capture me. Only after seeing an old rose for the first time (the Alba rose Mme Plantier), was the moment that I knew that this was the sort of rose I was looking for. Since that day I’m trying to find out more about these, for most people, forgotten beauties and plant as many of them as possible in my garden. Most of the roses that I grow have found a place in an allotment that I keep, since my own home garden is sadly much too small to grow roses. Although in that small space of just 15 square meters still some fourteen roses have found a comfortable place. In my allotment of roughly 300 square meters I currently have found a place for some seventy of eighty roses; hopefully more will come. Especially more moss roses, my absolute favorites.
In the page ‘My roses’ I have written a short introduction about old roses, and in the subpages there are descriptions of each species (Alba, Gallica, Centifolia etc.), with pictures and descriptions of most of the roses I have planted in my gardens. This is a somewhat ongoing process and more roses and descriptions will be added over time.
In my blog I will keep you informed of the growth of ‘my’ roses, trips to gardens and Rosaria, and off course of my failings and successes.
